Wow! The past few months have certainly been a whirlwind of events, and we are just now sitting down to update you all on our adventures! Last month, we finished off an incredible summer (our best one yet!), and we were happy to start our fall schedule a few weeks ago and welcome so many faces, new and old, through our doors. We'll give you a brief synopsis on what we've been up to lately.
We were so lucky to have Alyssa Hult join our coaching staff in June! Alyssa grew up in New Hampshire, was an accomplished level 10 gymnast, and went on to compete for West Chester University in Pennsylvania. She graduated this year and immediately started training with us at the end of the spring! Alyssa is also a compulsory rated gymnastics judge, and is hoping to earn her level 9 rating this fall. She brings a wealth of experience with her, and we are so happy to have her!
Summer campers know and love Miss Kassie, and we are also happy to announce that Kassie will be teaching preschool, school age, and hot-shot classes this year! Miss Kathy has also expanded her teaching repertoire to include school-age recreational classes as well!
Gym Momentum Camp
In July, 11 members of our Junior Olympic optional team went to Gym Momentum camp, where they had the opportunity to work with gymnasts and coaches from all over! Our girls met gymnasts from Iceland and Canada, and got to train alongside elite gymnast, Lexy Ramler. They worked hard, made new friends, and learned a lot along the way! Check out the video montage!
2016 USA Gymnastics Region 6 Congress
Spectrum Gymnastics Academy was well-represented in Providence, RI when Sarah, Lauren, Kathy, Elyse, and Alyssa attended Region 6 Congress, a three day long event full of clinics and workshops on the instruction of gymnastics. The great thing about gymnastics is that there is always something new to learn, and we are always looking to further our education, improve our teaching techniques, and expand our repertoire to help better serve our students! We learned a lot and could not wait to bring it all back to the gym!
2016 Olympic Games
Team USA had the most successful Olympic games to date! Our women's team completely dominated, and earned NINE medals in total! Simone Biles earned all-around gold, vault gold, balance beam bronze, and floor gold. Aly Raisman won all-around silver and floor silver. Laurie Hernandez won silver on balance beam, and Madison Kocian won silver on uneven bars. Together, our American women earned a team gold medal, and USA's women's gymnastics team has been UNDEFEATED since 2011! On the men's side, Danell Leyva (who was originally named as an alternate to the team, but needed to replace an injured team member) won the silver medal on the parallel bars and on the high bar, and Alex Naddour won the bronze medal on the pommel horse. We were able to stream women's team finals from the gym and it was such a wonderful experience! We LOVE olympic years!
In September, we kicked off our fall classes and they have been going GREAT! We've spent the past couple weeks focusing on safety and basics. Did you know that gymnastics classes are also great for playground safety and backyard trampoline safety? We believe that safety is the most important thing in gymnastics, which is why we place such a strong emphasis on learning safe landing and safe falling techniques, and the best part is, they translate to every day life! We hope everyone is enjoying the classes and having fun! After all, Spectrum is a fun place to flip!
Our competitive team continues to grow and we have started preparing for the upcoming competitive season. We have five level 5 athletes competing in a small local competition tomorrow (September 25th), in the hopes of achieving a qualifying score to level 6, where they will finish the rest of the season. At Spectrum, we try to focus on the individual success of the athlete and how we can help them grow and succeed. Team awards are great, but for us, helping each individual gymnast achieve her unique potential is where we place the highest value. Good luck Ali, Amanda, Ava H., Ava S., and Izzy!
It's going to be a great year! Thank you for being a part of the Spectrum family!
Peace, love, and gymnastics,
